India, where Vinitaly concluded a successful maiden appearance in Mumbai and Delhi in January, figures in the list of "interesting markets" for Italian wine released by the Chairman of the Italian Agricultural Confederation, Giuseppe Politi, at the 40th Vinitaly in Verona, according to AGI Online. Politi said Italian wine has conquered foreign markets, but Italy is stagnating and prices at origin are strongly down (20 per cent). In 2005 exports grew by 10.2 per cent in volume but by only over 5 per cent in value. Over the last ten years, Italian wine exports have doubled, with Europe taking more than half (down, comparatively, from 75 percent in 1995). Exports to the USA have tripled.
Politi emphasised that quality was driving Italian exports, with the US emerging as the No. 1 market for Italian wine. Following the US among important markets were Germany, the UK, France, Switzerland, Austria and the Czech Republic. Politi's list of "interesting markets" includes Albania, Brazil, China, Denmark, Hungary, India, Ireland, Mexico, Norway, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, Spain, and Thailand. |
