The funds for next year will go toward changing vines
to produce better quality wine, relocating vineyards
and improving techniques.
The EU is currently negotiating to totally revamp
its wine sector, ripping out unproductive vineyards,
making it possible to expand productive land, simplify
labeling and end certain techniques which contribute
to overproduction.
The EU has now set aside €3 billion ($4.35 billion)
over the past decade for the wine sector.
"Improving the quality of the wine we produce
is a top priority if we are to fend off the challenge
posed by New World wine producers," said EU Farm
Commissioner Mariann Fischer Boel.
