Billimoria said that the company was still studying
its options in the country, while a pilot had already
been done. "Though we intend to launch our wines
in India within the next three years for sure, we do
not want to move away from the rapid developments in
the beer market. The beer market in India is growing
at 27 per cent and we do not want to divert our attention
from there."
He, however, said that when the company finally enters
the wine market, it will be manufacturing the wine in
India through licensing arrangements with wineries in
the country.
He has signed licensing agreements with two breweries
in Orissa and Madhya Pradesh. The move is a part of
its strategy of setting up breweries and increasing
distribution channels across the country. The company
is aiming at producing 10 million cases by 2010. Last
year, it sold 0.5 million cases whereas it is planning
to increase it to 1 million this year.
Cobra currently contracts brewing to four plants in
Goa, Uttar Pradesh, Patna and Rajasthan. It is also
looking to set up breweries in Punjab and Hyderabad
with an investment of Rs 600-700 million excluding the
cost of land. The capacity of each brewery would be
three million cases.
