This smashes the auction house's previous record set
in June 2006 when 12 bottles of 1978 Romanée-Conti
from Domaine de la Romanée-Conti of Burgundy
fetched £93,500.
Single bottle of Hermitage La Chapelle 1937 netted
$ 11,000 while a second case of Hermitage La Chapelle
1961 sold for $ 225,000 , making the $ 44,000 paid for
a case of 1961 Château Mouton Rothschild appear
a great bargain.
The world record for a case of wine is currently held
by Christie's Los Angeles, which in September last year
sold six magnums of Mouton Rothschild 1945 for $345,000
.
The most expensive wine ever remains the notorious
bottle of 1787 Chateau Lafite 1787 supposedly from the
cellar of U.S. President Thomas Jefferson, which sold
at Christie's London in December 1985 for £105,000.
A magnum of Hermitage La Chapelle 1961 was earlier
auctioned for over $32,000 at Christie's Geneva in May
this year.
Most outstanding vintages of hermitage La Chapelle
have been 1961, 1964, 1972, 1982 and 1992.
Jancis Robinson, the famous wine scribe and author,
a fan of the '61 from Rhone in France, documents on
her website that she picked up a bottle of this iconic
wine for £30 about 26 years ago.
Hermitage La Chapelle is produced by Paul Jaboulet
Aine, in Northern Rhone and is imported by Sanjay Menon
of Sonarys, Mumbai.
