Italy's Production Could be Lowest in 50 Years

Italy's 2007 wine production is expected to be one of the lowest in 50 years, totalling some 43.2 million hectolitres, 13 percent lower than last year, experts said Saturday.

The Association of Italian Oenologists (Assoenologi) said exceptionally warm weather last winter as well as in April, July and August had ripened the grapes up to three weeks earlier than usual, especially in the south.

The weather was wetter in the north, and Assoenologi predicted that quality would be mixed, while wholesale prices would rise by between five and twenty percent.
