Douglas
Murray, director and founding partner of leading Chilean
wine producer Montes, spent the last week in Australia
and says his company soon hopes to sell 50,000 cases
a year here.
Chilean wines are extremely popular in Britain and
the United States with drinkers seeing them as offering
both quality and value for money.
"We've been in the Australian market for 15 years
and are becoming more visible. There's huge growth in
the import sector in Australia ," said Mr. Murray.
"Australian consumers recognise quality and value,
and many of them are looking for something different
to drink."
"The chance to sample and taste the wines of Chile
is proving increasingly attractive. We find when people
taste our wines, they buy them- and come back."
"Australia is the leader when it comes to New
World wines, and we've learnt a lot from them. We'd
like, in turn to double our sales here, but it would
be stupid to put a time frame on that."
Montes is a leading competitor for many Australian
wine exporters, with its wines ranging in price from
A$9.99 to $90.

Chilean wines are of course, extremely popular
already, in India. There are 14 importers, perhaps
the biggest number concentrating on this market, besides
French and the Italians. The previous Chilean Ambassador,
Mr. Jorge Heine was so much involved in the promotion
of wines from his country that he was considered the
face and ambassador of Chilean wines. Due to the recent
currency problems, these wines have become expensive
and a prey for the competition and the growth has apparently
retarded somewhat. These wines are expected to benefit
the most with the recent scrapping of Additional Customs
Duty- Maharashtra excepted.
Montes is being imported by Sonarys, in Mumbai-
