Centaur Hotel goes 7-Star in the new Avatar

Centaur Airport Hotel, once considered a landmark in central Mumbai, is being relaunched by the $1.5-billion Sahara group as a seven star hotel-cum-tourist hub, renamed as Sahara Star, this week, reports Economic Times.

The hotel's interiors have bee completely renovated but the exteriors have been left untouched.
Sahara Star will have a circular design with guest rooms facing the inner courtyard. Landscaped gardens are located inside the hotel with guest rooms being sound proofed, considering its proximity to the airport.

Sahara group decided acquire a hotel near the airport in Mumbai as it was considered necessary to have a hub for tourists in Mumbai and Amby Valley, and the firm's hill station near Lonavla in Maharashtra.

Sahara decided to acquire Airport Centaur because it was under a lease of 25 years, while other hotels that it were eyeing were on freehold land, say industry sources. The Airport Centaur was mired in controversy over valuation of the property. The sale of the Airport Centaur was done in 2002

The two Centaur hotels, Airport Centaur and Juhu Centaur, belonged to the Hotel Corporation of India (HCI), the wholly-owned subsidiary of Air India. HCI sold government-owned Airport Centaur Hotel in June 2002 to Batra Hospitality for Rs 83 crore.

The 300-room hotel on a 30,000-square-metre plot was resold to the Sahara group in four months for a sum of Rs 115 crore. In November 2002, the property was renamed Sahara Hospitality.

Juhu Centaur was sold to Ajit Kerkar's Tulip Star Hotels in March 2002 for Rs 153 crore.
