The Kumarmangalam Birla owned, Aditya
Birla Retail (ABRL), began roll out of its retail chain
on Friday, the 1st June, 2007 with the launch of a 'supermarket'
store under the brand name of 'More' in Vimal Nagar
area of Pune. This is first of the group's Rs. 9,000
crore retail venture, announced a few days ago.
According to plans, the 'More' retail
chain will have 14 supermarkets operating in Pune. The
group has decided to consolidate its operations in Pune
before venturing out in other cities of the country.
'More' will soon set up one hypermarket in Pune as well.
"The opening of 'MORE' in Pune marks
the beginning of a pan-India business for Aditya Birla
Retail Limited," said Sumant Sinha, CEO, ABRL.
"It has taken us 136 days to put
this store together. Fitch, the international retail
design firm, has designed the stores. There are four
key areas of merchandise in every store – fruits
and vegetables, staple foods, processed foods and snack
and non-food apparels," added Andrew Denby, CEO,
Supermarkets, ABRL.
The company has made arrangements with
250 farmers in the area to source its requirements of
fruits and vegetables. For this purpose, it has set
up two collection centres in the city.
