Wine may reduce dementia by 85% in elderly

Scientists from Italy have found that one glass of wine a day slowed the onset of dementia by up to 85 per cent in people aged between 65 and 84 who already had mild cognitive impairments (MCI), according to a new research, reported by retiretothesun.com

MCI is the term scientists use to differentiate the stage between the normal memory loss associated with ageing and dementia.

"While many studies have assessed alcohol consumption and cognitive function in the elderly, this is the first study to look at how alcohol consumption affects the rate of progression of mild cognitive impairment to dementia," explained one of the report's authors, Vincenzo Solfrizzi.

"The arrangement of blood vessels in the brain may play a role in why alcohol consumption appears to protect against dementia. This would support other observations that drinking moderate amounts of alcohol may protect the brain from stroke and vascular dementia."

As wine is a major part of the diets of several popular retirement locations - such as France and Italy - it is possible that retiring to the sun and embracing the local culture could help prevent dementia.

<The study does not clarify or address the benefits in this old age if you had been drinking wine regularly when you were young. By linking to sojourn in the sun, it also raises a doubt whether the benefits have been due to wine or the sun- editor>
