Organic wine makes debut in India

While the jury is still out on pairing Indian foods with wines, connoisseurs have thrown another variable in the ring: wines made from organically grown grapes or organic wines, reports financialexpress.com .

Organic wines taste as good as conventional wines. And connoisseurs are spared the morning after hangover, claims David Koball, director of Bonterra Vineyards, California . With more anti-oxidants, such wines are also said to keep down cholesterol levels and cell-oxidation rate.

Koball was in India last week to launch organic wines from the certified organic Bonterra Ranch. The range has been brought in by Brown-Forman, owners of Fetzer range of wines and Jack Daniels whiskey.

Adds Amrit Kiran Singh, area director, South Asia , Brown-Forman, "We want to be in sync with nature. As a company we believe that the future belongs to organic foods - and organic wines."

Subhash Arora, president of Indian Wine Academy , is not too sure. He points out, "In India, unfortunately, not much weightage is given to the organic aspect by the consumer." At the same time, he adds, "It will have its niche, though. These wines should be a lot better for people who get headaches by drinking wine."

While we get friendly with organic wines, a newer generation of biodynamic and sustainable wines is already making rounds in select bars worldwide.

The definition of biodynamic and sustainable wines may vary from company to company, but ultimately a wine is as good as it tastes, say connoisseurs.

Dear Sir,

Each month I host a high tea as dinner in a chateau in France and in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in historical houses. In November 2006, I was invited to New Dehli by Sopexa to showcase gourmet teas, and French wines. It was at that moment that I discovered India made wines. My first question why highlight French wines when you have the beauty of Indian wines here. The reason for my email is to invite you to Philadelphia to do a wine tasting of India for one of my monthly high teas. I would also love to visit your academy and share what I do here in the states and host a dinner there using Indian wines. I love the concept of organic because I am a lso a African American woman, French pastry chef, and French wine sommelier, founder for Oliver & Company Tea Room. Thank you for your response.

Sincerely,
Brenda Board

Dear Brenda,

You are rightly talking of the beauty of Indian wines. I am fascinated about the beauty of wine. Period. I love Indian wines, French wines as also Italian, German, Spanish, Chilean and New Zealand wines to name a few. Our credo is to promote wine culture through education and awareness. We are very neutral and unbiased and want the wine drinker to decide for himself/herself about the personal preferences. But it helps a lot to know something about wines.

Organic wines are new to India and the price will play a role, howsoever noble the cause might be. Gradually, they will get popular too, I am sure.

Tea and wine have a lot in common, right from the production process, quality and health benefits and the enjoyment one can derive by learning some basics from connoisseurs like yourself.

I visit the US , often. In fact, I am going to San Francisco in a couple of days to attend an international wine and heart health convention at Napa . I have gone to the graduate school at the U of M in Minneapolis . Unfortunately, I have never been to Philadelphia . When I do, I certainly would like to meet you. In the meantime, do let me know about your next visit to India . We can tell you about the Academy over a glass of wine or a hot cuppa.
