Starbucks to partner New Horizon

Starbucks plans to open its first store in New Delhi and subsequently in Mumbai by the year end. , the nation's commercial capital in partnership with New Horizon- a company jointly owned by Kishore Biyani (49%) and V.P. Sharma (51%), reports Bloomberg. V.P. Sharma is the Head of PT Mitra Adiperkasa, Starbucks' Indonesian franchisee, which operates 45 Starbucks outlets in Indonesia .

The first Starbucks store may go on stream by the year end. DelWine had earlier reported the first store opening in Mumbai in August in partnership with Kishore Biyani of Pantaloon . The government put a spoke in the wheel a couple of weeks ago as we had reported in the previous issue and slight delay is expected in the launch.

Starbucks is Seattle based and is the biggest coffee shop chain in the world with 12,440 stores worldwide. It will compete with already established home grown Barista and Cafe Coffee Day coffee shop chains in India . Barista plans to expand its network of 100 stores to 225 by the year-end.

People in most parts of India , except south, prefer drinking tea to coffee. Even, south Indians drink ground coffee. Preferences are, however, changing fast and increasing number of young Indians, especially students and upwardly mobile professionals, are favouring coffee shops as meeting and socialising places. About half of India 's population is less than 21 years old.
