‘The Next Time’ you go to London with ‘The Young Ones’ for a ‘Summer Holiday’, or ‘With the Girl in Your Arms’ who’s the Girl in Your Heart, the Vida Nova (new life) bubbly will remind you ‘Constantly’ that the avante garde styled rock star who is like an ‘Evergreen Tree’ and whose songs of the 50s and 60s have made him a living legend, was born in Lucknow to Anglo Indian parents who moved to England in 1948 after the partition of India.
It does appear that life has gone by at the speed of “travellin’ light” from the time when this confirmed ‘Bachelor Boy’ was the heart-throb of many ‘Living Dolls’ in India in the sixties and of course his adopted country UK which knighted him in 1995 as the first OBE rock star- even before Paul McCartney, Elton John, Mick Jagger and Tom Jones. In 2006, he also received Portugal’s equivalent of a knighthood in recognition of his 40 years of personal and business activities there.
The born-again singer, who will turn seventy on Oct 14, already owns a Quinta (wine estate and vineyard) in Guia, near Albufeira town in Faro District in the Algarve region of Portugal. The winery is named ‘Adega Do Cantor’, which means the ‘Winery of the Singer'. He already produces different labels of wine at this state-of-the-art estate under 'Vida Nova' brand and is now creating his first sparkling wine to celebrate his landmark birthday.
Sir Richard who started singing with a local band in Lucknow as a child for the ‘socials’ and parties has been singing for 52 years as a professional. He continues to be quite popular in the UK and will be performing a series of six concerts at the Royal Albert Hall, London as a part of his birthday celebrations. Tickets for the concerts were sold out within a few hours when they were offered a couple of months ago.
His winery spokesman claims that the first bottlings of the bubbly have been well received and the Adega has collected substantial number of pre-orders from the hard-core Cliff Richard fans.
So get ready to put on your “Dancin’ Shoes” and rock to his music and say ‘Congratulations’ on his birthday but ‘Please Don’t Tease’ him about his sexual preferences. You may have the ‘Lucky Lips’ but you may not want to say ‘I Love You’ unless you also advocate the same-sex marriage like he does.
