Grover Zampa has been the leader winning 11 out of the 16 Awards; KRSMA has to contend with 3 Commendations while Chandon has received Commendations for each of the 2 bubbly samples of Brut and Brut Rose’. Grover Zampa is the only Indian winery to bag Bronze medals- 5 of them for their Art Collection-Viognier, La Réserve Red, Soirée Brut , Soirée Brut Rosé, and Vijay Amritraj Reserve Collection Red.
The results would indicate that the Asian judges adjudged both the Brut and Brut Rose bubblies from Grover Zampa of better quality than the Chandon sparklers.
Grover Art Collection Rosé, Cab-Shiraz, Sauvignon Blanc, Viognier, Chene, La Réserve White and Vijay Amritraj Réserve Collection won 7 Commendations.
KRSMA received the Commendation in each of the 3 samples-Cabernet Sauvignon, Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay.
In a sharp contrast Chinese wines significantly increased their share from 43 Awards last year to 142 in this year’s Decanter Asia Wine Awards (DAWA). In 2014, they won merely 12 medals. In the same year 2014, India won 14 Awards-including 9 by Grover Zampa who also won the Trophy for Sauvignon Blanc.
Although there was no Silver medal for India this year- the last year’s Silver medal position of Vijay Amritraj red was relegated to the bronze category, the overall standing for Grover Zampa is very good- they scored in 11 categories this year as compared to 6 last year.
‘We were expecting a few Silver Medals and possibly a Gold since a couple of our wines were excellent for this vintage,’ says Sumedh Singh Mandla, CEO of Grover Zampa, who is also attending the Conference where he represented Asian Wine Producers Association as its Chairman for the current year and talked about the wine status in the member wineries and countries. He also later presented wines from Grover Zampa in a session for Taste of Indian Wines where Rajeev Samant and Kailash Gurnani of York also presented wines from their respected wineries. ‘Let’s wait and watch the results of Hong Kong International Wine and Spirits Competition when they will be announced later this month,’ said Mandla whose hopes are now resting with the Awards at HKIWSC.
Rajeev and Kailash both confirmed that Sula and York did not send samples this year, for various reasons. Both of them figured in the Award Winners List Last year.
