This achievement is based on their winning 11 Gold medals wone by Ferrari for Trentodoc (appellation) wines. Tom Stevenson, the founder of the competition and international expert of the industry, announced the winners during the Gala dinner held on September 14 at the Vintners Hall in London, one of the most historic and iconic places in the world of English wines.
delWine had already announced Chandon India winning a Bronze medal each for both its variants Chandon Brut and Chandon Brut Rose at this edition of CSWWC 2017 at London, becoming ostensibly the first Indian sparkling wines to win medals in the only competition in the world that judges annually only champagnes and sparkling wines. The competition has been held every year since 2014 by the Champagne specialist Tom Stevenson assisted by world authorities Essi Avellan MW and Dr. Tony Jordon. This year thre were entries from 29 countries including India.
Since its inception, the competition has always rated the TrentoDOC wines produced by Ferrari among the best sparkling wines in the world. Besides winning as Best Italian Sparkling Wine, Ferrari Trento became World Champion Sparkling Wine Outside Champagne in 2014 with its Perlé 2007 and Blanc de Blancs World Champion in 2016 with its Ferrari Brut NV.
Ferrari Brut NV is being imported by Sula Selections. At a blind tasting of 10 champagnes to celebrate the International Day at a wine lunch for the Delhi Wine club members, we had slipped in a Ferrari Brut Rose NV. It had received the second highest rating in that tasting.
This achievement by Ferrari highlights the special features of mountain viticulture as well as Trentodoc wines for sparkling wines. It is also a sign of changing times on the global wine scene, with growing appreciation for internationally produced, terroir-driven sparkling wines of equal or greater quality than those of France and its Champagne region.
Results had been already announced in July 2017 whereas the trophy winners were announced at the dinner on Thursday night at the Vintners Hall. 127 Gold medals were awarded and with 167 wines receiving a Silver. Champagne and Sparkling wines may appear to be a simple category but there are over 110 different trophies and Best in Class awards
delWine congratulates Ferrari and the Lunelli family for keeping the quality flag high just as Prosecco keeps forging ahead with bigger volumes every year at an expected consumption of over 600 million bottles despite shortage of grapes.
