Blog: Swaad and Sparklers may Swoon you in 2014
Dec 24: With the wine market limping along due to several factors, the government being the Big B in a seemingly ‘khalnayak’ role, next year starts with a cautiously optimist note for us in India but we hope to be swooned with a lot more of sparkling wines with the buzz created by Moet et Chandon’s desi avatar Chandon and perhaps the consumer realizing that what they are looking for are the ‘Swaad’ wines-a term not coined but frankly being promoted by me. Other day I was at a music soiree where Sula was being served as the aperitif white wine; I could tell from the

Paul John: Bigg Boss of Big Banyan
Dec 24: Paul John, Chairman of the Bangalore-based John Distilleries Pvt. Ltd (JDPL) which owns the Big Banyan Winery in Goa, is careful in pointing out that the wine business has full support of the organisation but he admits that the winery has charted a steady growth path while it continues to improve the quality of their wines rather than diffuse its energies in expanding in the national market. Subhash Arora reports. When you meet Paul John, you might not guess that he runs a Rs. 500 crore (Rs. 5 billion) liquor business with an estimate valuation of the enterprise

Dec 20: Marta Delfa, Brand Ambassador of Torres was in India for two weeks, visiting Goa, Mumbai, Bangalore and finally Delhi where she met customers of Prestige Wines with a final stop at the dinner hosted at the 1911 Restaurant at the Hotel Imperial where she charmed the guests as much as the six wines from Torres, nicely paired with the 7-course meal. Subhash Arora reports. If the soon-to-be-released bubbly from the Torres stable in Vilafranca in Spain is as bubbly, vivacious, fresh and yet as elegant as Marta Delfa, the Brand Ambassador of Torres, the Cava-oops

South African Giant ready to Conquer India
Dec 19: If the reports by the agencies are taken at their face value, one of the biggest companies of South Africa, KWV is all set to enter India through a relatively unknown importer and grab a major share of the South African market with a total sales of 30,000 cases within three years that could give a major fillip to the South African wines in India. In a Release, a hitherto unknown wine importer Kristal Spirits India (KSIPL) has announced today a marketing and distribution tie-up with the South African wine major. According to the release, these KWV wines will be

Abrau Durso: Tale of a Wine Competition in Russia
Dec 20: The huge Sparkling Winery of Abrau Durso, in the small village of the same name, decided to organise a mini wine competition along the lines of the Paris tasting organised by Steven Spurrier, to compare Russian wines to those from Outside Russia. John Salvi MW who was one of the 4 non-Russian judges, reports on the event. I have done a few competitions in Russia recently, but they were classical competitions to choose medal winners and select the best wines in each category. The huge Sparkling Winery of Abrau Durso, in the small village of the
