| A "revolutionary" study promoted by the University of Pisa has as its main goal that of scientifically defining the quantity of wine that each person can drink for positive health effects, reports the website, www.winenews.it.
The question first appears to be easily resolved, given that there is quite a large collection of scientific literature on the beneficial effects of wine on human health. But, in reality, there has never been any scientific study on the subject of the quantity of wine that is beneficial.
As Professor Amedeo Alpi points out: "We know more or less the effect of one glass of wine during a meal is positive, but we don't know anything about two glasses, and we think that three glasses are probably too many. We want to study the effects of wine consumed at meals to find out, if possible, a quantitative reference that can then be scientifically measured."
After the preliminary cataloguing of the scientific texts and publications on the link between wine and health, the epidemiological study will begin on a sample of at least 1,000 people, taking into account differences in gender, eating habits, and lifestyles.
"Alcohol is bad for you but wine is something else," says Alpi. "Our goal is that of finally giving scientific information on the positive health effects of wine through methods that are precise, quantifiable and scientifically relevant."
